At 21 years old, Miss Girl is already a muse for Steven Meisel. Hey, remember that Italian Vogue All Black Issue? You know, the best-selling issue of all time? Well, the issue came with four separate covers, and Sessilee was one of the coveted four. Meisel has done a ton of editorials of her in Italian Vogue, like the one up top. Just look at her work! « Read the rest of this entry »

Iconic drag queen Tyra Banks has told WWD that she’ll be au natural on this season of America’s Next Top Model, going weave-less the WHOLE season. Wow. In our Age of Total Weave, where almost errrbody has some kind of weave up in they heads, this is risky!!!
It sounds like a huge deal – I mean, what is Tyra without her many complicated weaves?!?! – but it’s not really, because Tyra’s natural hair is long and beautiful as it is. That’s why her lace-fronts look so good!!! You know, it’s sort of funny how she’s making a huge deal about going weave-less – is this supposed to give some, like, empowering message to women? Is it saying: “Hey ladies, don’t be slaves to your weaves!”
I think it’s more that she’s trying to look slightly less drag-queeny this season. But whatever. Weave is fabulous. Men and women should both walk around in weaves, carrying a personal fan pointed at their face for that really dramatic effect.

Gisele, who is so fierce that last year she raked in $35 million dollars, wrote a check to the Red Cross in Haiti for $1,5 million dollars to aid the relief effort there. Not impressed? Then you should know that Gisele’s $1,5 million donation is MORE than what Bank of America, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, or American Express each put in the pot. See? Supermodels are fabulous and generous!

On December 9th, my favorite model and professional glamazon Gisele gave birth to a baby boy! Babies are so in right now. Gisele’s sister Patricia calls the new born “a beautiful, healthy baby boy.” Well duh. His parents are super ultra hot – what else could he be? I bet the little sucker is really cute. Though, it looks like Tom + Gisele haven’t come up with a name for the baby yet. I just hope it’s not something “ironic” like Baseball or, um, Crayon.

Apparently, the December 2009 cover of Italian Vogue features models who photographed themselves. So far we only have the cover, but you can see a luscious looking Gisele, plus Lara Stone, Natalia Vodianova and Christy Turlington. But no Chanel Iman or, like, another black???
I love the self-pic idea for so many reasons. First of all because it fits right in with our moment of picture vanity and instant communication, where all anybody does is take pictures of themselves for their Facebook profiles or various party/amateur porn websites (Guys with iPhones!). As we all know, if you’re not on Facebook, you’re sorta not even really real.
So I totally dig that Italian Vogue is up to speed on the current cultural moment. But the other thing that’s interesting about the self-pic idea is that it gives the model the chance to represent herself – as we see in the art of Cindy Sherman, who always styles herself in her own images.
Or what about Elle Muliarchyck, that model/artist who secretly took photographs of herself in luxury boutiques?
I don’t think it’s too naive of me to think that this self-pic idea is a great response to the many efforts to shatter the airbrushed glamour of fashion photography, especially as France moves to virtually ban airbrushing. Not only can a fashion photograph be totally neat sans Photoshop, but hey look – models are real people, too.

Alright, kids. So I made a list of the ten hotteset models. Yay! I guess I’ve got models on the mind. So whether the dudes give you hot flashes or the girls kill you with that Eastern European Death Glare, the one thing these models have in common is HEAT. Yowza.
It’s interesting to me that my list of top ten models won’t look like yours. What do we see of ourselves in the models we like?
CHANEL IMAN – The New Tyra Banks
My favorite of all. Chanel just walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. We didn’t see much of her but that’s ok – she’s the hottest black model in the game! Hopefully she doesn’t start throwin Blackberry’s at us non-model folks…
COLE MOHR – The Punk
This dude is super hot and works the rocker + androgynous + heroine chic look. If you watch the video, you can’t tell if these guys are gay or straight but, like, does it really matter? (READ: the dude in the screen grab is not Cole.) Besides, he used to be a muse for Hedi Slimane. That’s good enough for me!

Model Solange Magnano, Miss Argentina 1994, died on Sunday after complications from elective cosmetic surgery.
The death of the Solange Magnano reveals a host of issues related to women and images issues, beauty, and standards of appearance. Why do so many women – and men – resort to plastic surgery to be beautiful? Is there something wrong with beauty and the role of spectacular appearances?
